The 2010 Big West Women's Golf Championship comes into focus this weekend, as the seven league squads head to the Central Coast for the newly-minted three-day event at San Luis Obispo Country club. Cal Poly will serve as the host of the event, which is held at the only country club in San Luis Obispo County.
Defending champion Long Beach State headlines the seven squads heading to the west slopes of the Edna Valley, as the 49ers look to pick up the second title in program history. LBSU is led by Simone Hoey, the younger sister of former 49er Kay Hoey, with a 76.5 stroke average over seven tourneys, while Lindsey McAtee (77.0), Noelle Zavaleta (77.1) and Monica Villarreal (77.9) have also been solid for the club this season.
UC Davis is no slouch heading into the tournament as the Aggies are ranked #33 in the current Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings and are coming off a tie for second in last season's Championships. UCD is led by the duo of Alice Kim and Demi Runas who possess 74.6 and 74.9 strike averages, as well as Amy Simanton who is third on the team at 75.3. The Aggies possess great depth as their fourth-highest stroke average belongs to Chelsea Stelzmiller who lost top medalist honors in a three-hole playoff back at the 2008 Championships.
Perennial Big West power UC Irvine will look to reclaim its throne after its four-year run atop the league was ended a year ago by Long Beach State. The Anteaters are led by Joy Trotter, who owns the best stroke average (74.0) in the Big West and is ranked #92 in the country in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Hillary Packard (74.7) joins Trotter in the sub 75-stroke club for UCI, while Lalita Patipaksiri (75.9) and Henna Cho (77.5) make the 'Eaters a dangerous side at the tournament.
