The first of the Big West Golf Championships is only three weeks away as the women will gather at San Luis Obispo Country Club April 18-20 for their edition of the Conference Championship, hosted by Cal Poly.
Big West Championships on the Horizon: This year's Big West Golf Championship will be broken up into two separate events with the men’s and women’s championship being played on different weekends and courses. The 2010 Big West Women's Golf Championship is slated for April 18-20 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club with Cal Poly serving as the host school. Each day will feature one 18-hole round. Cal Poly and UC Riverside will each play in an April tournament prior to the Big West Championships as both schools head to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Wyoming Lady Cowgirl Classic April 5-6.
Women's Programs Remain Ranked: Two Big West women's golf programs are still among the top 50 in the country in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. UC Davis is in the #28 slot (73.94), while UC Irvine is 43rd (74.65). Both programs had great performances in the month of March as the Aggies had two top three finishes in its three tournaments, while the Anteaters recorded three top five finishes.
Men in Final Preparations for Championships: With the 2010 Big West Men's Golf Championship slated for is schedule for May 3-4 at the Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo, Calif., the men's programs are using April as the final tune-up for the Championships. Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Irvine will play in one of the more prestigious tournaments in the nation in the U.S. Intercollegiate hosted by Stanford in Stanford, Calif. The tournament marks a busy April for UCI as it is one of three competitions the club is taking part in, the most in the Big West for the month.
UCI's Chin Rounding into Form: John Chin of UC Irvine has been one of the hottest players in the league the last couple of months as the senior owns three first place finishes in his last four events. Technically, it is only two medalist honors as Chin lost in a playoff at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. He owns the lowest scoring average in the league at 70.2 and has six top 10 finishes in eight tournaments this season. Chin is also up to #25 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Men's Individual rankings, the lone Big West golfer to appear in the top 100 in the rankings at this point in the season.
Speaking of rankings, two Big West women's golfers find themselves in the top 100 as Joy Trotter of UC Irvine and Alice Kim of UC Davis are in the 96th and 97th positions, respectively.
LBSU Men Wrap Up Successful March: The Long Beach State men's contingent had a pretty good run of things in March as the team was the only club in the Big West to record two top three finishes. The 49ers kicked off the month with a second place showing at the Braveheart Classic, then came in third at the Triumph in Pauma Valley. The team also competed in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, finishing in 14th in one of the toughest fields in the nation. Freshman Benjamin Lein led the club throughout the difficult month with a 218 (74-71-73) at the Braveheart, 225 (78-76-71) at Pauma Valley and 232 (82-76-74) at the Hootie.
Goydos Named Assistant Team Captain for 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup: Former Long Beach State men’s golfer Paul Goydos was named as one of four assistant team captains for the 2010 United States Ryder Cup Team. Goydos will be joined by Davis Love III, Jeff Sluman and former captain Tom Lehman. The announcement was made by U.S. Team Captain Corey Pavin on February 4 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.
Goydos was a four-year letterwinner at LBSU (1981-85) under former long-time head coach Del Walker. In 1985, Goydos captured the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the former Serfas Country Club in Corona and was first team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association as he finished in fifth place at the PCAA championship.
