The junior is one of 20 million deaf people in the United States and is also the only deaf student-athlete to play Division I men's basketball. Last March, he also became the first deaf athlete to compete in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
Matt Brown delves into the story of Lizarraga and his assimilation into the Matador basketball program. Interviews with CSUN head coach Bobby Braswell, teammate Willie Galick and interpreter Erin Matthews shed light on the development of Lizarraga into a productive member of the team and campus community. Lizarraga, who has started eight of 15 games this season, is averaging 3.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
