One of the busier weekends of Big West swimming will occur this weekend as all five teams will take the starting blocks in competition against top tier clubs.
Cal State Northridge and UC Davis will head to the site of the Big West Championships, Belmont Pool in Long Beach, Calif., for the Toshiba Classic. The three-day meet, which is hosted this year by UC San Diego, will be run in an NCAA Championships format and features 14 teams on the men's side and 26 clubs on the women's side.
Saturday features the second meet of the season between Central Coast rivals Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. This time the two teams will meet in the newly renovated Anderson Aquatics Center on the campus of the Mustangs. The last matchup was held in a triathlon style as each club had its athletes swim in three distances of the same event.
Pacific is also in competition this week as the team hits the road for a tri-meet. UC Santa Cruz will join the Tigers as visitors as they take on Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon in in Fresno, Calif.
Previously in the Big West
Last week in the Big West saw a tri-meet and a dual meet take center stage on the swim docket.
The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's teams competed in a tri-meet against conference rival Cal State Northridge and UC San Diego at Campus Pool, winning both competitions against the two schools. The Gaucho men topped CSUN, 168-78, and UCSD, 155-96, while the women downed the Matadors, 159-94, and the Tritons, 144-112.
The only other team in action was the UC Davis men as they hosted a dual meet against Fresno Pacific. It was a victorious afternoon for the Aggie men as they downed FPU, 167-125. Scott Weltz led the way for UCD with first place finishes in the 100 back (50.79) and 100 fly (50.17). Both times are the best in the conference in those events.
