UC Santa Barbara's Julian deRubira and Cal Poly's Kayleigh Tyerman were the first honorees of the 2009 edition of the Big West men's and women's Athlete of the Week awards, respectively.

DeRubira, a native of Aliso Viejo, Calif., won his first career honor after a solid season-opening performance at the UCSB Lagoon Open. The junior won the 8K men's race in 24:33, crossing the finish line six seconds ahead of teammate Scott Smith for the individual title.

Tyerman, who hails from Medford, Ore., was highly successful in her first collegiate race at the UCSB Lagoon Open. The freshman was the first collegiate finisher and ranked third overall in the 5k women’s event, mastering the course in 17:38.
