No. 2-seeded Cal State Fullerton is just two wins away from making its 16th trip to the College World Series. Standing in the Titan's way are the Louisville Cardinals, who visit Goodwin Field this weekend for a best-of-three Super Regional. Earning a No. 2 national seed gives the Titans the luxury of staying in the familiar confines of Goodwin Field, where they were 23-8 this season.
The top-seeded Titans swept the Fullerton Regional with dominating performances over No. 4 Utah (twice) and No. 3 Gonzaga. Cal State Fullerton (45-14) has put together another stellar season with its sixth 40-plus win season over the last seven years.
Louisville (47-16) is making its second trip to the Super Regionals after winning its Regional Monday evening. The Cardinal's path was a bit more bumpy then the Titans, as Louisville forced a deciding game seven after falling to Vanderbilt Sunday. Louisville won the second game against the Commodores by a score of 5-3 to earn one of 16 spots in the Super Regionals.
While both teams made appearances in the 2007 College World Series, the two teams have never faced each other on the baseball diamond.
The battle between the Titans and Cardinals gets underway Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2. Saturday’s first pitch will be tossed at 2:00 p.m. and aired on ESPN. Sunday’s if necessary contest has a 7:00 p.m. start time on ESPN2.
The winner of the Fullerton Super Regional advances to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., June 13-June 23/24. Cal State Fullerton has made Rosenblatt Stadium its final destination four of the last six years, missing out on the midwestern party in 2005 and 2008.
The determination of the Men's College World Series order of first-round games both Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, will be announced Monday, June 8. The ESPN family of networks and www.ncaa.com will release the MCWS game dates and times as soon as they are available.
