UC Irvine hurlers Daniel Bibona, 2009 Big West Pitcher of the Year, and Eric Pettis are joined by Cal State Fullerton pitcher Daniel Renken on the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I Baseball All-America team as announced by
Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Along with the trio of pitchers making the elite list is Anteater shortstop and 2009 Big West Player of the Year Ben Orloff. Bibona collected first team accolades, while Pettis, Orloff and Renken nabbed third team honors.
Bibona, a 6-0 southpaw, posted an 11-1 record in the regular season and went undefeated in conference play at 7-0, leading UC Irvine to its first-ever Big West crown. Bibona, owning a conference-high 94 strikeouts, enters this weekend’s NCAA Regional ranked fifth in the nation in wins and 23rd in ERA at 2.65.
Pettis has tallied 16 saves in 27 appearances this season to rank fourth in the country. The West Hills, Calif., native is just two saves away from owning the single-season UC Irvine record with 18 saves, which would place him second in the Big West record books. His 33 career saves currently places him fourth in the league.
Orloff is currently hitting .359 and boasts a .978 fielding percentage. The senior from Simi Valley, Calif., is eighth in UC Irvine's season records with a league-high 85 hits and tops the team with 17 stolen bases, tying him for sixth in the Big West. Orloff is one of 15 semifinalists for the Brooks Wallace Award presented by the College Baseball Foundation, which honors the country’s top shortstop.
Renken, a first-team All-Big West Conference right-handed pitcher, holds a 9-2 record with a 2.50 ERA in 14 starts for the Titans in 2009. The sophomore from Cypress, Calif., has the 19th-best ERA in the nation going into this weekend's NCAA Regional and ranks 18th in the country in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (6.68). Cal State Fullerton has had at least one All-American pitcher dating back to the 1998 season - by far the longest streak in the nation.
