Cal Poly's James Nunno and Cal State Northridge's Sherrina Lofton proved their multi-event mettle at the 2009 Big West Multi Championships as Nunno won the decathlon and Lofton won the heptathlon in the first leg of the 2009 Big West Track & Field Championships. The events were held at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.

Nunno, who also won the decathlon title in 2007, nabbed the crown after amassing 7,208 points in the ten events. After finishing day one in fourth place with 3,726 tallies, Nunno took home the title thanks to 759 points in the 110 hurdles, 585 in the discus, 910 in the pole vault, 500 in the javelin and 728 in the 1500 meters. His teammate Corbin Duer made it a 1-2 finish for the Mustangs as he collected 7,135 points, while Cal State Northridge's Robert Robinson was third with 6,830.

Lofton took home the heptathlon title after finishing with 5,224 points, her first career multi-event crown. She came into the day in second place after collecting 3,228 points in day one, but surged to the title after picking up 697 points in the long jump, 565 in the javelin and 734 in the 800 meter run. Teammate Shelese Ruffin finished in second place for the Matadors thanks to 5,023 points, while third belonged to day one leader Barbara Nwaba of UC Santa Barbara with an even 5,000 tallies.

The remainder of the Big West Track & Field Championships will take place next week in Anteater Stadium. Friday's action kicks off with field events at 11 am, while the track events get started at 4 pm. Tickets will be $12 for adults for a single day pass and $20 for adults for a two-day Championship pass. Students and youths will be charged $6 for a single day and $10 for a two-day pass.
