UC Irvine Climbs To Third With One Round Remaining At NCAA Regionals

The UC Irvine women's golf team moved into third place Friday following the second round of the NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Host Arizona State leads the 21-team field with a two-round score of 20-under 556 and USC is second at 572.

In second round action, the Anteaters shot a round of four-under-par 284 and have a 36-hole total of 573 entering Saturday's final round. UCI senior Jane Chin shot a three-under 69 Friday and is tied for second with USC's Belen Mozo at eight-under 136. Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda is the individual leader with a nine-under total of 135 after a 68 in the second round.

Anteater freshman Joy Trotter shot an even-par 72 Friday and is 19th at 145. Lalita Patipaksiri sits in 34th place after carding a 73 in the second round. Patty Chawalitmetha is 41st at 148 following a round of two-under 70 and sophomore Hillary Packard is 67th at 153 after shooting 78 today.

Long Beach State women's golf team shot a 22-over par 310 to finish the second round of the NCAA West Regional in 17th place. The 49ers carded a 299 in Thursday's opening round to finish tied for 13th. Senior All-American Kay Hoey moved up in the standings to finish in the top 20 as she carded an even-par 72 to tie for 19th. Freshman Lee Lopez recorded a 75 as she fell from 32nd to to tie for 41st. Reina Rogers shot an 82 to tie for 91st, while junior Brenda Chhuor carded an 84 to tie for 97th. Lindsey McAtee improved by three shots to finish the round with an 81 to place 102nd.

UC Davis sophomore Alice Kim used a hot start to get to four shots under par before finishing with a one-under 71 on Friday, rallying into a tie for 19th after two rounds. Teammate Chelsea Stelzmiller, who like Kim is playing in the regional tournament as an individual, had a second-round 76 and is tied for 53rd after 36 holes. Kim is at one-over 145 while Stelzmiller is at six-over 150.

The NCAA West Regional concludes tomorrow and you can follow the Big West live at www.golfstat.com. The top eight teams and top two players not on an advancing teams will move forward to the NCAA Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., May 19-22.
