The first leg of the 2009 Big West Track & Field Championships takes place this weekend as decathlon and heptathlon championships will be decided. The conference schools will send their best to Anteater Stadium for the two day event which starts Friday afternoon.
The decathlon will start first on both days as the action starts at 2 pm Friday, while the heptathlon kicks off at 2:30 pm that same day. Saturday's schedule has the decathlon starting at 11 am with the heptathlon events beginning at 1 pm. In all, the decathlon will have 18 competitors while the heptathlon has 12 athletes in action. This weekend’s decathlon field features Cal Poly's James Nunno, the 2007 conference champion, and Cal State Northridge's Robert Robinson, the runner-up in 2007 and 2008. Shelese Ruffin of Cal State Northridge placed third in last year’s Big West heptathlon.
Admission to the event will be free and live results will be posted online at Flash Results which is accessible through the Big West website.
There will also be six teams in action as a final warmup before the Big West Championships next week.
UC Davis will be the busiest school on the docket at the club will go to the Sacramento State Open Friday and the California Invitational Relays Saturday. Meanwhile, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara will all be in Eagle Rock, Calif., for the Oxy Invitational.
