Find out what’s happening in the world of Cal Poly athletics weekly with press conferences straight from San Luis Obispo. Three new press conferences from the Mustangs are now available on BigWest.TV. This week, hear from softball coach Jenny Condon, baseball coach Larry Lee, and senior decathlete James Nunno.
The No. 21 ranked Cal Poly softball team heads into the final weekend of the regular season with their destiny in their hands. They are in first place in the Big West, with a 15-3 conference record and a one-game lead over second-place Cal State Fullerton (14-4). Though they won two out of three, Mustangs stumbled last weekend, falling to Pacific (3-15, 8th) in Game 2 of their doubleheader on Saturday, May 2, ending a fourteen-game winning streak and an undefeated home season. Coach Jenny Condon talks about her team’s reaction to the unexpected setback and the close of the regular season this weekend. The Mustangs will head to Riverside to take on the Highlanders in a weekend series that begins on Friday, May 8.
Coach Larry Lee’s Mustang baseball team enters the week ranked as high as 12th in the nation and tied with Long Beach State for third in the Big West at 10-5. Winning two out of three last weekend in a non-conference series with USF, the Mustangs are headed toward a showdown with No. 5 and second-place Cal State Fullerton this weekend. But before they face the Titans, the Mustangs will travel to Los Angeles to take on USC Tuesday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. PT. The conference showdown then begins on Friday, May 8 at 6:00 p.m., with Games 2 and 3 of the series on Saturday and Sunday. The series will be available in its entirety on BigWest.TV.
Cal Poly’s James Nunno will be competing in the Big West Track & Field Multi-Event Championships this weekend at UC Irvine. The senior won the Big West decathlon in 2007 and has the top mark in the Big West this season with 7142 points, which also ranks 20th in the nation. Nunno speaks about the upcoming championships as well as the pole-vaulting accident that kept him out for 2008. The Big West Track & Field Multi-Event Championships are set for May 8 & 9, while the Individual Event Championships will be held on May 15 & 16, also at UC Irvine.
