Big West Introduces 2008-09 Winter All-Academic Team

The Big West announced the names of 92 student-athletes from nine member institutions who have earned Academic All-Big West Conference honors for the winter sports of men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming and diving today.  To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes have to maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, have attained a sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.

UC Santa Barbara topped all schools with 23 honorees, including a league-high 11 women's swimming and diving student-athletes.  UC Irvine and UC Davis tied with 13 honorees apiece.  The Anteaters had nine student-athletes from the men's swimming and diving team recognized, while the Aggies contributed six men's and six women's members from the swimming and diving team.  Twelve Pacific student-athletes received all-academic accolades, as well as 10 from Cal State Northridge and eight from Cal Poly among schools with swimming and diving programs.

Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Riverside do not compete in swimming and diving, but had representatives in the sport of basketball.  For the second straight year, a league-high six Long Beach State women's basketball student-athletes earned all-academic honors.  Cal State Fullerton had four women's basketball honorees, while UC Riverside claimed two from women's basketball and one from men's basketball.
