Long Beach State continues to maintain its lead in the 2008-09 Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup race after the conclusion of conference play during the winter sports season. UC Santa Barbara rests in second place and has closed the gap to 3.9 points.
The Gauchos had a successful winter, winning three championship titles. The men’s and women’s swimming teams took home conference championships once again as did the women’s basketball team. The men’s basketball team tied for fourth place to secure an additional 100 points.
The Gauchos and the 49ers have finished first and second in each of the last eight Commissioner’s Cups. In 2006-07, the teams were separated by just one point in the final standings. The battle should come down to the wire once again, as it has the last few years as Long Beach State is historically strong in baseball, women’s tennis, men’s track and softball while UC Santa Barbara has a history of success in women’s track, men’s tennis and softball.
The Big West Commissioner’s Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is presented at the end of the spring season to the institution with the top overall point average tallied from Big West Conference Championships. To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus.
