3/9/2009

The men’s and women’s basketball regular season is over, and sixteen teams are headed to the Big West Basketball Tournament this Wednesday through Saturday, March 11-14, 2009.  The Cal State Northridge men and UC Santa Barbara women successfully defended their titles from 2007-08 to enter the tourney as the top-seeded teams in their brackets.  BigWest.TV will carry the first two rounds of the men’s tournament and the first three rounds of the women’s tournament this week.

Meanwhile, as basketball wraps up, softball and baseball are in the thick of their non-conference schedules.  Four softball games and three baseball games will air this week on BigWest.TV.  As a bonus for fans, all baseball and softball games this week will air free of charge.

Men’s Basketball

Every game during the final week of the men’s basketball regular season was fraught with seeding implications.  The dust has settled, and the eight seeds for this week’s Big West Tournament are set to begin their quest for the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  BigWest.TV will have coverage of the opening and quarterfinal rounds of the tournament.

The tournament’s opening round will begin on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:00 p.m. PT, when No. 5-seed UC Irvine takes on No. 8 UC Davis.  The second game of the night will feature No. 6 UC Riverside against No. 7 Cal State Fullerton and will begin approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.

On Thursday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m., the No. 3 Pacific Tigers will play their first game of the tournament in the quarterfinal round against the lowest remaining seed from Wednesday’s opening-night games.  The No. 4 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos will be the home team in the second quarterfinal game and will play the highest-remaining seed.  The Gauchos will also tip approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of the Pacific game.

The bracket for the Big West Men’s Basketball Tournament can be found here (.pdf).

Big West Tournament games will be available at no extra charge to BigWest.TV monthly and annual subscribers.  They are also available as a separate purchase of $5.95 for all men’s and women’s basketball tournament games.

***NOTE:  The Friday, March 13 semifinal games will be shown live on ESPNU beginning at 5:30 p.m PT, with the second game airing roughly thirty minutes after the conclusion of game 1.  The Saturday, March 14 men’s championship game will air live on ESPN2 at 9:00 p.m. PT.  Due to rights restrictions, none of these games will air on BigWest.TV.***

Women’s Basketball

While the top four seeds had been sewn, last week saw a scramble for the remaining slots in the Big West Tournament.  Eight teams are now set to fight it out for a trip to the Big Dance.  BigWest.TV will air all games of the women’s basketball tournament, with the exception of the championship game on Saturday, March 14.

Tournament play begins on Wednesday, March 11 at 12:00 p.m. when No. 5 UC Davis tips off against No. 8 Cal State Northridge.  The No. 6 Cal State Fullerton Titans and No. 7 UC Irvine Anteaters will face each other in the second game of the afternoon approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of the UC Davis-Cal State Northridge match.

Quarterfinal action is set for Thursday, March 12 with the No. 3 Cal Poly Mustangs and No. 4 Pacific Tigers seeing action.  Game 1 of the night will tip at 12:00 noon, with Cal Poly facing the lowest-seeded team remaining.  Pacific will then take on the highest seed remaining in Game 2 one half-hour after Game 1 ends.

No. 1 UC Santa Barbara and No. 2 UC Riverside enter the tournament fray on Friday, March 13.  The top-seeded Gauchos face the lowest remaining seed in Game 1 at 12:00 noon, and the Highlanders will take on the highest remaining seed  in Game 2.

The bracket for the Big West Women’s Basketball Tournament can be found here (.pdf).

Big West Tournament games will be available at no extra charge to BigWest.TV monthly and annual subscribers.  They are also available as a separate purchase of $5.95 for all men’s and women’s basketball tournament games.

***NOTE:  The Saturday, March 14 women’s championship game live on Fox Sports Net at 1:00 p.m. PT.  Due to rights restrictions, this game will not be shown on BigWest.TV.***

Baseball
