Get the latest on Cal Poly athletics with the Mustangs’ weekly press conferences from San Luis Obispo. This week, hear what’s going on in women’s basketball, men’s basketball, basebll, softball, and women’s tennis.
Coach Faith Mimnaugh’s squad has secured the third seed in the Big West and will have a first-round bye in next week’s Big West Basketball Tournament (Anaheim Convention Center, March 11-14). Cal Poly will face the lowest-seeded team remaining when they open tournament play on Thursday, March 12. But before a run at the Big West Conference championship, they have two more regular-season games to play. The Mustangs will travel south to take on Long Beach State (Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. PT) and UC Riverside (Saturday, March 7 at 5:00 p.m.). Both games will air live on BigWest.TV.
The Cal Poly men’s hoops team has been eliminated from tournament contention, but can still play spoiler this week. Coach Kevin Bromely and the Mustangs will host Long Beach State and UC Riverside in their final two games of the 2008-09 season. The Mustangs and 49ers will play on Thursday, March 5 with the 49ers looking for a piece of the Big West Conference title. Meanwhile, UC Riverside arrives at Mott Gym looking to hold onto the fourth seed in the Big West Tournament on Saturday, March 7. Both games tip at 7:00 p.m. and will be available on BigWest.TV.
Following an opening-day loss to Rice, the Cal Poly baseball team has since rattled off six-straight wins, beating defending national champion Fresno State and sweeping Sacramento State last week. Coach Larry Lee’s squad, ranked No. 17 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, takes to the road this week for its only trip outside of California in 2009. They will face Houston in a three-game set beginning on Friday, March 6.
Cal Poly pitcher Anna Cahn was named Big West Pitcher of the Week for her role in the Mustangs’ 5-1 weekend at the DeMarini Invitational at Fullerton. Coach Jenny Condon’s team will return home to host their own tournament this weekend. The Mustang Classic will begin on Friday, March 6. Cal Poly is scheduled to face Temple (2:00 p.m.) and Sacramento State (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, Utah State (2:00 p.m.) and Sacramento State (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday, and Utah State (9:00 a.m.) and Temple (11:00 a.m.) on Sunday. The Friday and Sunday games will be available free of charge on BigWest.TV.
Junior Brittany Blalock was the lone highlight of last weekend’s Cal Poly-USC match-up in women’s tennis, defeating national No. 8 player Maria Sanchez. However, the Mustangs did pull off a conference victory against UC Riverside. This week, coach Hugh Bream’s Mustangs will travel to Long Beach to take on the 49ers before returning home for a five-match homestand.
