3/2/2009

The Big West Basketball Tournament (March 11-14, 2009) is just a week away, with the conference title in both men’s and women’s basketball up for grabs.  On the men’s side, Cal State Northridge made a big statement about their claim to the title with their win over Long Beach State on Saturday.  The title is still up for grabs with Northridge, Long Beach, and Pacific each with a shot at the title.  Meanwhile, the women’s title may hinge on this week’s meeting between UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside.  The two are currently tied atop the league standings.

Baseball and softball seasons are in full swing, with BigWest.TV expanding its coverage of both sports this week following a series of rainouts earlier in the season.  The Pacific Tigers baseball team will finally make their home and BigWest.TV debut this week, as well as 2007 Big West softball champs Cal Poly.  As a bonus for fans, all baseball and softball games this week will air free of charge.

Women’s Basketball

The final week of the regular season begins on Wednesday, March 4 with the Cal State Northridge Matadors (3-11, 8th overall) hosting the UC Davis Aggies (6-9, 5th) at 7:00 p.m. PT.  Both teams need wins to help secure their seed positions in the Big West Tournament.  The Matadors need a win to stay ahead of UC Irvine (3-12, 9th) for the final spot in the tournament, while the Aggies are trying to secure their seed ahead of Cal Sate Fullerton and Long Beach State.  This will also mark the Aggies’ final regular-season game of the year.

Thursday, March 5 sees the most-anticipated women’s game of the year when UC Santa Barbara heads to Riverside to face the Highlanders.  The Gauchos and Highlanders are neck-in-neck for the Big West Conference title, as well as best overall record in the Big West, heading into the final week of the regular season.  Both teams are 18-9 overall and 13-1 in conference play.  With player-of-the-year candidates and graduating seniors comprising much of both teams, the game should live up to its billing.  Tip-off from the Student Recreation Center is set for 7:00 p.m.

Long Beach State (4-10, 7th) will host Cal Poly (10-4, 3rd) in Thursday night’s second game.  The 49ers are just a half-game behind Cal State Fullerton (5-10, 6th) for the sixth seed in the tourney and a one-and-a-half behind current fifth seed UC Davis.  The Mustangs, meanwhile, have wrapped up the third seed and will receive a first-round bye.  Game time at the Pyramid is 7:00 p.m.

The final games of the regular-season will air on Saturday, March 7 beginning at 4:00 p.m. when Pacific (8-7, 4th) travels to Northridge to face the Matadors and UC Irvine hosts Cal State Fullerton.  The Tigers will be the No. 4 seed in next week’s tournament and will receive a bye into the quarterfinals.  The Anteaters will need to win to keep their hopes alive for making it to the post-season, and the Titans need the win to maintain the spot in the standings.  Saturday’s final two games tip-off at 5:00 p.m. with UC Santa Barbara at Long Beach State and Cal Poly at UC Riverside.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball race is still open, with Cal State Northridge (10-4, 1st), Long Beach State (9-5, 2nd), and Pacific (9-6, 3rd) still within reach of the Big West title.  And with just two games separating third through eighth place, every game will have a tournament feel.

The final games of the week begin on Thursday, March 5 with three games beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Cal Poly (3-11, 9th) will host Long Beach State, UC Davis (7-8, T-5th) will face league-leading Cal State Northridge, and UC Santa Barbara (6-8, 8th) will square-off against UC Riverside (7-7, 4th).  The Mustangs have been eliminated from tourney contention, but will have a chance to play spoilers this week.  The Aggies are looking to break a three-way tie for fifth place and possibly lay claim to the fourth seed in their final regular-season game of the year.  The Gauchos have won 5 of their last 6 and will be looking to maintain momentum as well as rise in the standings against the Highlanders, who have already secured their best season as an NCAA Division-I team this year.

The final games of the regular season are on Saturday, March 7, with all tip-offs slated for 7:00 p.m.  Cal Poly will host UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara will face Long Beach State, and Pacific will take on Cal State Northridge in a game that could decide the Big West title.

***NOTE:  The Saturday, March 6 UC Irvine at Cal State Fullerton contest will air at 3:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Net West.  Due to rights restrictions, this and other ESPN or Fox Sports games will not be shown on BigWest.TV***
