The long hours of training and preparation come to an end this week as the six Big West swimming & diving clubs hit the pool for the conference championship meet Wednesday-Friday. The event will once again take place at Belmont Olympic Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
On the men's side, preseason favorite UC Santa Barbara looks to win its second straight championship and fourth title in the past six years. UCSB currently has athletes ranked in the top three of 11 individual events and has relay contingents ranked in the top two of each of those competitions. Despite the Gaucho dominance, the field will present many challenges to UCSB's projected title run.
UC Davis, which spent time ranked among the top mid-major programs in the country this season, has excelled in year two of its Division I membership. The Aggies have athletes ranked in the top three of 12 individual events and have posted the top times in two of the five relay events. Also keep an eye on Cal Poly and UC Irvine, which return a bevy of talented swimmers and boast outstanding newcomers capable of leading either squad to the top.
The women's competition has UC Santa Barbara returning as the three-time defending champion. The Gauchos have been just as impressive during the regular campaign as they have top three times in each of the 14 individual events, with 11 of those races having at least two Gauchos among the top trio of marks.
The field will be tough as Cal Poly, UC Davis and Pacific each have athletes scattered among the top three marks right behind the Gauchos.
On Wednesday, the meet kicks off at 6 pm with time finals of the 200 medley relay, 1,000 free and 800 free relay. For the complete meet schedule as well as live results, click on the link above.
