2/23/2009

The conference races are tight as teams approach the Big West Basketball Tournament (March 11-14, 2009).  With just two weeks left in the regular season, Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State are tied atop the men’s standings at 8-4 in conference play.  Just three games separate the first through eighth-place teams on the men’s side.  On the women’s side, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside are separated by just a half game.

Big West baseball and softball seasons are underway, teams plowing through packed non-conference schedules.  Baseball saw its first action on BigWest.TV last week, while softball should see its first action this week after having its first week rained out.   As a bonus for fans, all baseball and softball games this week will air free of charge.

Women’s Basketball

League-leading UC Santa Barbara (12-1 in conference, 1st) takes a break from conference play to host Oregon State on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:00 p.m. PT.  The Gauchos had their 11-game conference win streak and their 19-game conference road win streak snapped last Thursday at Pacific (8-6, 4th).

More non-conference women’s hoops action comes to BigWest.TV on Wednesday, February 25 when UC Davis (5-9, 5th) faces Cal State Bakersfield beginning at 7:00 p.m. PT.  The Aggies fell to the Gauchos and Cal Poly (9-4, 3rd) last week.  They’ll need to regain some momentum with just two conference games left on their schedule to hold onto the fifth slot in the standings.

Conference play returns to BigWest.TV on Thursday, February 26 with a trio of games.  Cal State Fullerton (4-9, 6th) will welcome UC Riverside (11-1, 2nd), Cal Poly will face Cal State Northridge (3-9, T-7th), and UC Irvine (3-10, 9th) will square off with Long Beach State (3-9, T-7th).  The Titans need to get back on track after losing two in a row following their home win against Pacific on February 12.  The Highlanders have won a school-record eleven games in a row as they race toward the conference title and their showdown with the Gauchos on March 5.  Cal Poly is looking to solidify their hold on the third slot in the standings, while the Matadors need wins to keep them in the conference tournament picture after being left out in 2008.  UC Irvine and Long Beach are in the same boat as the Matadors, trying to stay ahead of each other for a spot in the conference tournament.  The game is a critical tiebreaker, as the Anteaters won the first meeting between the teams on January 31.

All nine women’s teams will be in action on Saturday, February 28.  The first game of the afternoon will match UCSB against Cal State Northridge at 2:00 p.m.  At 4:00 p.m., Cal Poly will face Cal State Bakersfield and UC Irvine will host UC Riverside.  The Cal Poly contest is the first a of a doubleheader with the Mustang men, while the UCI-UCR contest is the first game of a doubleheader with the UCI and UCR men’s teams.  Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton face off at 5:00 p.m., while Norcal rivals UC Davis and Pacific close out the week beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

The week in men’s hoops starts on Wednesday, February 25 with a trio of games scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  Cal Poly (3-10, 9th) begins their final two weeks of regular season play with a non-conference contest at home against Cal State Bakersfield.  Pacific (7-6, T-3rd) and UC Davis (7-6, T-3rd) face off in a battle to break their tie; the Tigers defeated the Aggies handily on January 31.  The final contest of the night pits two teams who finished tied for the conference crown in 2008, but who are currently headed in different directions, against each other.  Cal State Northridge (8-4, T-1st) and UCSB (5-7, 8th) will face off in the Matadome with the Matadors having lost two in a row and the Gauchos winners of four straight.

Men’s basketball action continues on Thursday, February 26 with regional action.  Cal State Fullerton (7-7, T-5th) squares off against UC Riverside (6-6, T-5th) and Long Beach State (8-4, T-1st) welcomes UC Irvine (6-7, 7th).  The Titans are Highlanders both want the fourth slot in the standings and the first-round tournament bye that comes with it.  The Titans won the first match-up on January 31.  The 49ers regained a share of first place last week after dropping into the second slot in the standings the week before.  With just one game separating the ‘Eaters from third place, they still have shot to move up (way up) in the standings.

A trio of games will close out the week and the month on Saturday, February 28.  At 7:00 p.m., Cal Poly will face Pacific in the second game of a doubleheader with the Mustang women, while UC Santa Barbara will take on UC Davis.  At 7:35 p.m., the UCI and UCR men will tip in the second game of a doubleheader with the UCI and UCR women.

***NOTE:  The Saturday, February 28 Long Beach State at Cal State Northridge contest will air at 3:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket.  Due to rights restrictions, this and other ESPN or Fox Sports games will not be shown on BigWest.TV***

Baseball

With the first weekend of the 2009 baseball season behind them, there is still no time to rest for Big West squads, as mid-week games begin on Tuesday, February 24.  The University of the Pacific Tigers will make their 2009 BigWest.TV season debut against Sacramento State, with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m.

***UPDATED: Tuesday, February 24 - The Pacific-Sacramento State baseball game has been canceled due to poor field conditions.  No make-up date has been scheduled. For more information, go to PacificTigers.com***

Following a successful first week in which they took two of three from No. 3-ranked Rice, the Cal Poly Mustangs will return to BigWest.TV on Friday, February 27.  The Mustangs will also host Sacramento State in a contest scheduled at 6:00 p.m.  The No. 5 Cal State Fullerton Titans will hope to rebound after losing the last two games of a series against TCU last weekend when they take the field against Stanford at 7:00 p.m.  The Titans and Cardinal last met in June’s 2008 NCAA Super Regional series at Goodwin Field, with the Cardinal getting the better of their hosts.

Game 2 of the Titans-Cardinal series will take place on Saturday, February 28.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  The Cal Poly-Sacramento State game on Saturday will not be shown due to conflicts with Cal Poly men’s basketball.

The Mustangs return to BigWest.TV on Sunday, March 1 to complete their three-game set against the Hornets, as do the Titans, who will close out their set against Stanford.  Both games will see their first pitch at 1:00 p.m.

As a bonus for fans, all games this week will air free of charge.

Softball

Big West softball has been in swing for three weeks now, but the debut of softball on BigWest.TV lost out to Mother Nature that first week.  The Cal State Fullerton Titans will take another swing at it on Wednesday, February 25 when UCLA arrives at Anderson Family Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.  This game will air free of charge.
