2/16/2009

Three weeks remain in Big West regular-season play, with the race for the conference title in both men’s and women’s basketball still tight on both sides as teams approach the Big West Basketball Tournament (March 11-14, 2009).  Cal State Northridge (8-3 in conference) snatched the lead on the men’s side away from Long Beach State (7-4) last week, now holding a one-game lead over the 49ers for the conference title.  On the women’s side, UC Santa Barbara (11-0) remained undefeated in conference play, while second-place UC Riverside (10-1) kept pace with their tenth-straight victory.

Big West baseball will also make its 2009 season debut on BigWest.TV this weekend, with five games featuring two Top-5 nationally-ranked teams.  The Cal Poly Mustangs and No. 5 Cal State Fullerton Titans will be the first teams to appear on BigWest.TV this year.  This will mark the third season that BigWest.TV will air select baseball games from across the conference, and as a bonus for fans, all baseball games this week will air free of charge.

Men’s Basketball

Big West men’s basketball teams will get their lone conference game out of the way early this week as they prepare for the ESPNU BracketBusters event on Saturday, February 21.  The three conference match-ups this week on BigWest.TV will take place on Wednesday, February 18 beginning at 7:00 p.m. PT.  Cal Poly (3-9, 9th) will play host to UC Davis (6-6, T-5th) as the Mustangs try to keep their Big West Tournament hopes alive, while the Aggies look to make good on the potential that they’ve shown.  UC Santa Barbara (4-7, 8th) faces Pacific (7-5, 3rd), with the Gauchos trying to salvage their once promising season, and the Tigers looking to sneak into the top two in the standings.  The third game of the night features Cal State Fullerton (7-6, 4th) taking on Long Beach State (7-4, 2nd).  The Titans moved into fourth place and a first-round bye over the weekend, and the 49ers are looking to regain their footing, having lost four of their past six games.

On Saturday, February 21, three Big West teams will host ESPNU BracketBusters opponents as part of the seventh edition of the event.  Cal Poly will host South Dakota State of the Summit League, UC Davis will square-off against Fresno State of the WAC, and UC Santa Barbara will take on Montana State of the Big Sky Conference.  The UCD game will be the second game of a double-header with the Aggie  women.  All games will tip at 7:00 p.m.  Road match-ups and more information on the BracketBusters event can be found here.

***NOTE:  The Wednesday, February 18 Cal State Northridge at UC Irvine match-up will air at 8:00 p.m. PT on ESPNU, and the Saturday, February 21 Long Beach State vs. Green Bay contest will air at 2:30 p.m. on ESPNU.  Due to rights restrictions, this and other ESPN or Fox Sports games will not be shown on BigWest.TV***

Women’s Basketball

Contests also begin on Wednesday, February 18 for four women’s teams, as Cal State Northridge (2-8, 8th) hosts UC Irvine (2-10, 9th) at 7:00 p.m.  The Matadors fell to the Anteaters by two points on January 24 in Irvine and are looking for revenge.  They are also looking to solidify their hold on the final spot in the Big West Tournament, having missed the tournament last year.

A pair of games on Thursday, February 19 feature a NorCal-Central Coast flavor as UC Davis (5-7, 5th) welcomes Cal Poly (7-4, 3rd) to the Pavilion, while UC Santa Barbara (11-0, 1st) heads to Stockton to take on Pacific (7-5, 4th).  The Aggies are trying to find the form that took them to the finals of last year’s Big West Tournament, and the Mustangs are hoping to wipe away memories of their four-point loss to the Gauchos last weekend.  Speaking of the Gauchos, UCSB is on a nation’s best 19-game conference road winning streak, while the Pacific Tigers return home to the Spanos Center where they hold an 11-1 record on the year.  Both games tip at 7:00 p.m.

A rare Friday match-up will feature the Long Beach State 49ers (3-8, 7th) tipping off against the UC Riverside Highlanders (10-1, 2nd) at the Walter Pyramid beginning at 7:00 p.m.  After a rough start to conference play, LBSU has won three of their past five conference games to move back into the conference tournament picture.  The Highlanders are riding a ten-game winning streak and have won twelve of their past thirteen contests.

A trio of games will close out the week on Saturday, February 21 beginning at 4:00 p.m.  Cal State Fullerton (4-8, 6th) will travel to Northridge to take on the Matadors, and Pacific will square-off against Cal Poly.  At 4:45 p.m., the UC Davis women will tip-off against UCSB in the first game of a double-header with the Aggie men.

Baseball

Spring equals the “ping” of bats, as the 2009 baseball season gets started this Friday, February 20, with two games on the schedule.  The first pitch will be thrown by the Cal Poly Mustangs when they face the No. 3-ranked Rice Owls at 6:00 p.m. PT.  Cal Poly is looking for revenge for a series sweep by the Owls in 2007.  In the second game of the night, the No. 5-ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans take to the newly-renovated Goodwin Field when they host TCU at 7:00 p.m.  The Titans are the overwhelming favorite to win the 2009 Big West crown.

Another baseball doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, February 21 when the same four teams from Friday night take to the field.  Cal Poly will face Rice at 1:00 p.m., and Cal State Fullerton will square off with TCU at 6:00 p.m.  Due to scheduling conflicts with Mustangs men’s basketball, the 6:00 p.m. Cal Poly-Rice baseball game will not be shown on BigWest.TV.

The final game of the weekend will get underway from Fullerton at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 22 when the Titans and Horned Frogs play game 3 of their series.

As a bonus for fans, all baseball games this week will air free of charge.
