2/9/2009

A month of play remains before the Big West Basketball Tournament (March 11-14, 2009), with much to be settled beforehand.  The leaders wire-to-wire so far, the Long Beach State men and UC Santa Barbara women held onto their leads in the conference standings last week.  The 49ers split their contests last week, losing to UC Davis, but winning in double-overtime against Pacific to retain their slim half-game lead over Cal State Northridge.  The Gauchos remained undefeated in conference play by winning a pair of games against Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.

Men’s Basketball

The week in Big West basketball begins on Wednesday, February 11 with a pair of games beginning at 7:05 p.m. PT, when Cal Poly (3-7 in conference, T-8th) travels to Northridge to take on the Matadors (6-3, 2nd).  At approximately 8:00 p.m., UC Riverside (5-5, T-4th) will host league-leading Long Beach State (7-3, 1st) in the second game of a Highlander double-header with the UCR women’s team.

On Thursday, February 12, Northern California and Southern California will clash and try to clear up the logjam in the middle of the conference standings.  UC Davis, UC Irvine, and Pacific are all 5-5 in conference play and tied for fourth place, while Cal State Fullerton sits ahead of them alone in third place at 6-5.  The Aggies will host the Anteaters while the Tigers and Titans tussle, both beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The week in men’s hoops ends with a trio of games on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m.  UC Davis and Pacific will swap opponents, as the Aggies face off against Cal State Fullerton and the Tigers welcome UC Irvine.  Meanwhile, the Central Coast schools will fight for the upper-hand in the race for the last spot in the Big West Tournament when UC Santa Barbara hosts Cal Poly.  The Gauchos and Mustangs are currently tied for 8th in the standings.

***NOTE:  The Saturday, February 14 UC Riverside at Cal State Northridge match-up will air at 5:00 p.m. PT on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket.  Due to rights restrictions, this and other ESPN or Fox Sports games will not be shown on BigWest.TV***

Women’s Basketball

A pair of games on Wednesday, February 11 kick-off the women’s basketball week on BigWest.TV when UC Riverside (9-1, 2nd) plays Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference contest at 5:30 p.m.  The Highlanders will be playing the first game of a double-header with the UCR men.  At 7:00 p.m., Long Beach State (2-8, T-8th), will try to exact some revenge when they host Cal State Northridge (2-6, 7th).  The Matadors earned their first conference win this year against Long Beach on January 17.

Northern California teams UC Davis (3-7, T-5th) and Pacific (6-4, 4th) travel south on Thursday, February 12 to take on UC Irvine (2-8, T-8th) and Cal State Fullerton (3-7, 5th), respectively.  The match-ups are critical for seeding in the Big West Tournament, as Pacific tries to earn a bye into the quarterfinals by maintaining position in the top four, while the Anteaters try to stay ahead of Long Beach State for the eighth and final spot in the tourney.  Both games tip at 7:00 p.m.

All nine Big West teams will be in action when they wrap-up the week on Valentine’s Day, beginning with a pair of games at 4:00 p.m. PT.  League-leading UC Santa Barbara (10-0, 1st) will travel up the coast to face Central Coast-rival Cal Poly (7-3, 3rd).  It will be both teams’ only game of the week.  Meanwhile, the Pacific Tigers will travel to Irvine to square-off against the ‘Eaters.  At 5:00 p.m., Cal State Fullerton will tussle with UC Davis, Long Beach State will host Texas Pan-American in a non-conference contest, and UC Riverside will face Cal State Northridge.
