Spring is in the air (in California, at least), which means that Big West baseball is ready to hit the field.  Get ready for the 2009 Big West Conference baseball season with preseason interviews on BigWest.TV.  Over the next few days, new previews with the coaches and players of the Big West Conference will be added to the roster.

Cal Poly

The Mustangs battled injuries throughout the 2008 season to key players and finished seventh in the Big West with a record of 24-32 (8-16 in conference), the first time in five seasons Cal Poly has failed to reach the .500 mark.  Returning 2008 All-Big West 2nd Team members Wes Dorrell and Luke Yoder, the Mustangs are looking to better their fifth place finish in the Big West preseason poll.  Hear from coach Larry Lee and senior OF Ryan Lee, one of the cornerstones of the Cal Poly squad.  Ryan batted .357 with 11 doubles, 3 triples, and 21 RBIs on his way to an All-Big West Honorable Mention selection.  See what each of them have to say about getting the Mustangs back to their winning ways.

Cal State Fullerton

After taking the reins of the program from friend and mentor George Horton, head coach Dave Serrano promptly guided the Titans to a share of the 2008 Big West title and an appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals.  The Titans are the preseason favorite to win the Big West title again, despite having lost Big West Tri-Pitcher of the Year Jeff Kaplan and All-Big West First Team member Erik Komatsu to the MLB Draft.  Respect for the program also extends beyond the Big West, as the Titans are ranked in the top 10 in a number of major polls.  Find out what Coach Serrano has to say about this year’s young, but experienced roster and the sky-high expectations for his program.

Cal State Northridge

In 2008, the Matadors fielded the youngest team in the Big West, finishing 24-32 overall (8-16 in league) and tied for seventh in the conference.  The youth movement continues this season, with underclassmen making up more than half the roster.  However, the Matadors return 2008 Big West Freshman of the Year Ryan Pineda as well as three more All-Big West honorees in hopes of surpassing their eighth-place pick in the Big West preseason poll.  Head Coach Steve Rousey is joined by senior John Parham, who hit .348 with 37 runs and 32 RBI on his way to an All-Big West Honorable Mention selection in 2008.  The two discuss why a year older means a year better and why they're optimistic about the continued improvement of the club.

UC Irvine

In 2008, Coach Mike Gillespie took over a UC Irvine program with sky-high expectations, having been to the College World Series for the first time in program history in 2007.  Gillespie promptly guided the Anteaters to the best overall record in the Big West at 42-18 (14-10 in conference) and came within a few outs of a return to Omaha.  While the ‘Eaters lost mainstays in All-American Scott Gorgen (2008 Big West Pitcher of the Year), OF Ollie Linton (All-Big West Second Team), and C Aaron Lowenstein to the MLB Draft, they return a wealth of talent on the mound and in the field for the 2009 season.  Gillespie is joined by senior OF Tony Asaro (.314, 24 runs, 4 HR, 21 RBI) as they give their thoughts on how the ‘Eaters might continue their stellar play.

UC Riverside

The Highlanders entered 2008 looking to defend their Big West Conference title from the 2007 season, but were left with what Coach Doug Smith calls a “very disappointing season.”  UC Riverside finished the season in third in the Big West with an overall record of 21-33 (14-10 in conference).  This season, they will bring back twenty-two letterwinners including seven position starters, among them 2007 Big West Freshman of the Year and 2008 All-Big West Second Team member Joey Gonzales.  The Highlanders will also return their pitching staff, lead by Paul Applebee, Paul Bargas, and Ryan Platt.  In his preview, head coach Doug Smith talks about the reasons behind his optimistic outlook for 2009 and why the Highlanders are poised to return to make a run at the top of the Big West.
