Josh Jenkins (Albuquerque, NM/Frank Phillips College/Valley HS) were named Big West Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Week for their roles in leading their teams to 2-0 records against league opposition.
Akognon led a pair of second half comebacks after shooting poorly in the first halves of victories against Long Beach State and UC Riverside. He made 8 of 12 shots and scored 23 of the Titans' 37 second-half points in a 61-60 win. He hit the game-winning bucket with 3.9 seconds left. Against the Highlanders, he hit 4 of 9 shots for 12 second half points. Ten of those points were scored during a decisive 17-4 run that turned a seven-point deficit into a six-point lead.
He averaged 23.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 36.4% (16 of 44) from the field and 77.8% (7 of 9) at the free throw line.
Jenkins guided the Matadors to a pair of road victories versus UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. Against the Gauchos, Jenkins had 13 points and six assists, including the assist that led to the game-winning basket with 11 seconds to play. He posted 18 points and seven assists, hitting five three-pointers in a 79-68 win against Cal Poly. Jenkins shot 41.2% (7 of 17) from the field and 63.6% (7 of 11) from three-point territory while averaging 15.5 points and 6.5 assists for the week.
