The Big West men’s and women’s basketball seasons are nearing their halfway points, with undefeated teams sitting atop both standings.  Long Beach State men’s basketball continued their surprising start last weekend, knocking off Cal State Northridge to improve to 5-0 in conference play.  On the women’s side, UC Santa Barbara is also 5-0 after defeating Cal Poly.

Women’s Basketball

The week in women’s basketball begins on Wednesday, January 21 when Cal State Fullerton (3-2 in conference play) hosts Cal State Northridge (1-3).  The Titans split their trip to Northern California last weekend, winning at UC Davis while falling at Pacific.  The Matadors picked up a hard-fought victory with an overtime win against Long Beach State.  Game time at Titan Gym is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.

The Central Coast takes on Northern California when Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara face off against Pacific and UC Davis on Thursday, January 22.  The Mustangs (2-3) are looking to bounce back following their loss last weekend to the Gauchos, while the Tigers (4-1) are coming off a sweep of UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.  UC Davis (3-2) is searching for some consistency, having split the first three weekends of league action.  They will have their hands full with the surging Gauchos, who have won seven in a row.  Both games tip-off at 7:00 p.m.

All nine Big West teams will be in action on Saturday, January 24 beginning at 2:00 p.m. with a showdown between league-leading UCSB and the Pacific Tigers, who begin the week a game behind the Gauchos.  At 4:00 p.m., UC Davis travels to San Luis Obispo to take on the Mustangs while Cal State Northridge heads down the road to take on UC Irvine (0-5).  Push will come to shove as the Matadors are winless on the road, while the Anteaters have yet to win at home this season.  The weekend’s final games begin at 5:00 p.m., with Cal State Fullerton taking on Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference match-up while UC Riverside (4-1) and Long Beach State (0-5) face off in Riverside, where the Highlanders are undefeated.

Men’s Basketball

A pair of games starts the week off on Wednesday, January 21 when the Matadors (3-2) and Titans (2-4) face off in Northridge.  CSUN split their contests last week, winning at home against UC Riverside and losing on the road at Long Beach, while Cal State Fullerton is hoping to rebound from a pair of losses to UC Davis and Pacific.  Meanwhile, the UC Irvine (3-2) will host Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference tilt.  The Anteaters are coming off a split last week, defeating Pacific while falling to Davis.  Both of Wednesday’s contests are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

On Thursday, January 22, the Central Coast travels to Northern California when UC Santa Barbara (2-3) heads to Davis to take on the Aggies (3-2) and Cal Poly (0-5) squares off against Pacific (3-2) in Stockton.  The Gauchos won their only game last week over Cal Poly, and the Aggies swept their Southern California trip to Fullerton and Irvine.  The Tigers bounced back from a one-point loss at UC Irvine to win handily against the Titans.  Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. for both games.

The final men’s games of the week will air on Saturday, January 24 when UC Davis welcomes Cal Poly to the Pavilion and UC Irvine pays a visit to Cal State Northridge.  The Aggies and Mustangs are set to begin at 7:00 p.m., while the Anteaters and Matadors square off at 7:05 p.m.

***NOTE:  On Saturday, January 24, the UC Santa Barbara at Pacific men’s basketball game will be shown live on ESPNU at 7:00 p.m.PT, while the UC Riverside at Long Beach State match-up will also air at 7:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket.  Due to rights restrictions, these and other ESPN or Fox Sports games will not be shown on BigWest.TV***
