UC Santa Barbara Sweeps First Weekly Awards of 2009

UC Santa Barbara claimed the first Athlete of the Week awards of the new calendar year as Bradley Matsumoto and Anne Marie May took home the men's and women's honors, respectively, after stellar efforts in a dual meet against USC.

Matsumoto, a native of Easton, Calif., captured first place in the 50 free (20.62), then placed second in the 100 free (45.41), finishing just .01 seconds behind teammate Jeff Sudbury. The senior then wrapped up the meet by helping the Gaucho men to a season-best time in the 400 free relay (3:01.25) and a second place finish in the event.

May, who hails from Carmel, Calif., finished first place in the 50 free (23.10) during Saturday's meet at USC, the only first place finish by a UCSB female athlete in an individual event during the meet. The junior also anchored the Gaucho 400 free relay (3:25.37) to a first place finish with her split of 40.02. She also posted a split of 49.93 in the 400 medley relay, an event UCSB finished in second.
