A week after UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge opened up the 2009 portion of the Big West swimming schedule, three more clubs kick off the new year with meets against solid competition in preparation for the conference championship meet in just seven weeks.

The UC Davis women’s contingent, who is ranked #17 in the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Women’s Mid-Major Division I Swimming Dual Meet Poll, will be the lone squad to host an event this weekend as the Aggies welcome San Jose State and Fresno State for a tri-meet at the Schaal Aquatics Center. It marks the fourth consecutive season that UCD and SJSU have meet in a dual meet, with the Aggies capturing three straight wins against the Spartans. The 2008-09 season marks the return of the Bulldog swimming & diving program, ending a hiatus that began following the 2003-04 season.

UC Santa Barbara and Pacific will make short trips to take on Pac-10 rivals as the Gauchos head to Los Angeles to take on USC, while the Tigers head to the Bay Area to take on Stanford.

UCSB and USC battled a year ago at Campus Pool in Santa Barbara as the Gaucho men defeated the Trojans for the first time in school history, while the UCSB women narrowly lost to USC by a 109-94 margin. Meanwhile the Pacific and Stanford will be meeting for the first time since the 2004-05 season. In that meet, the Cardinal swept the day with a 159-96 win on the women’s side and a 144-107 final in the men’s competition.

UC Davis and Cal Poly received some national attention over the holiday break as the Aggies and Mustangs both appear in the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I rankings.

The Aggies come in at the #5 position on the men’s side and the #17 slot in the women’s list, marking the first time that the program has appeared in the national mid-major poll. The Mustangs appear in the Also Receving Votes section of both polls.

The CollegeSwimming.com rankings are based on each team’s best dual meet lineup as judged and submitted by participating teams. Rankings are announced four times throughout the season: November (Pre-Invite), December (Post-Invite), February (Pre-Conference), and March (Post-Conference).
