The final swimming and diving meets of the 2008 calendar year will take place this weekend as four Big West schools prepare for big-time competition across three events.

UC Davis wins the frequent flier award as the Aggies are sending their squads to two different meets. UCD's women's contingent will be in Seattle, Wash., to participate in the Husky Invitational for the second straight year. Familiar faces will be joining the festivities as UC Santa Barbara will also head north for the three-day competition. Joining the Aggies and Gauchos will be host Washington, USC, Oregon State, Boise State, Seattle, Hawaii and Division III members Whitworth and Puget Sound. Both the hometown Huskies and the Trojans are nationally ranked programs.

The UC Davis men's team heads to the capital of the Lone Star State for the Texas Invitational hosted by the Longhorns.

While the Aggie women are battling a nationally recognized field, the UCD men will also participate against some of the biggest names in collegiate swimming. The clubs in Austin include No. 1-ranked Longhorns, No. 2 and defending national champion Arizona along with Arizona State and Wisconsin. This is the first time that UC Davis will compete in the Texas Invitational.

A conference school will also host a meet this weekend as Cal Poly welcomes Fresno State and league foe Cal State Northridge to the Central Coast for the Mustang Invitational. Due to renovations at Cal Poly's home pool, the meet will be held at Sinsheimer Park in San Luis Obispo.

Friday's event will feature both men's and women's swimming while on Saturday the Cal Poly women will face off against the Fresno State women, as the Bulldogs only sponsor women's swimming. Fresno State's club was on hiatus for five seasons before returning for the 2008-09 campaign.

Following this weekend, the Big West swimming schedule takes a break for the holidays. Competition will resume on the first weekend after the new year as Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine compete in the Ayres Diving/Sprint/Distance Invitational hosted by UCI. After that, it will be a mad dash to prepare for the finish as the league’s championship meet is scheduled to take place February 25-28.
