Cal Poly's Kline Wins Second Weekly Honor; Cal Poly's Buck and UCSB's Freeman Share Women's Award
Three athletes claimed swimming & diving honors this week as Cal Poly's Peter Kline won his second men's award of the week, while the Mustangs' Lacy Buck and UC Santa Barbara's Katy Freeman shared the women's accolades.
Kline, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif., had an outstanding showing at the UCI Shootout. Kline posted winning times in the 100 back (51.39), 200 IM (1:54.05) and 400 IM (4:00.40), while coming in second in the 200 back (1:50.79).
Buck, a freshman from Long Beach, Calif., had a solid effort in her first big collegiate meet. Buck was third in the 1650 free (17:01.93) on day one, then won the 500 (5:06.30) and 1000 free (10:30.94). Her 1650 time was two seconds faster than the conference champion from 2007-08, while her 1000 time was over ten seconds better than the second place finisher in the event.
Freeman, a senior from Concord, Calif., competed very well for the Gaucho women in the tri meet with UCLA and Oregon State. She took first-place in both the 100 (1:03.64) and 200 breaststroke (2:17.80), the only individual UCSB athlete to take home first place during the meet.
