11/12/2008

The Big West Men’s Soccer Tournament kicks off on Wednesday, November 12 when top-seeded UC Irvine hosts No. 4 seed UC Davis at 7:00 p.m. PT. The second semi-final match will also kick off at 7:00 p.m. from UC Santa Barbara’s Harder Stadium, when No. 2 seed UCSB faces No. 3 Cal Poly. The Big West Tournament Championship is scheduled for Saturday, November 15 at a site to be determined. Keep up with all the action on BigWest.TV with exclusive interviews of the players and coaches involved in the tournament.

National No. 8 UC Irvine (12-1-6 overall, 5-1-4 in conference) won their first Big West regular season title since men’s soccer was reinstated in the Big West for the 2001 season. The Anteaters claimed the title during the final day of competition with their 2-1 victory over Cal State Northridge, becoming only the third institution to win the crown (Cal State Northridge, UC Santa Barbara). They will face the ever dangerous No. 15-ranked UC Davis Aggies (12-3-4, 4-2-4), who were picked to finish second in the conference. Find out what head coach George Kuntz has to say about winning the conference title and what he feels will be the keys to Wednesday’s match-up with the Aggies.

Picked to win the conference title by in the pre-season poll, the national No. 20 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (10-5-4, 5-2-3) finished tied with Cal Poly (10-5-5, 5-2-3) in the standings. The Gauchos earned the second seed by virtue of their victory over Cal Poly during the regular season, leaving the Mustangs with the third seed. This will be the second Gaucho-Mustang match-up in the past week, as the two teams played to a scoreless tie on November 5 in front of 9,749 at UCSB’s Harder Stadium, the fourth-largest regular-season crown in NCAA history. However, the crowd was not the largest in the rivalry’s history. Their first match-up in San Luis Obispo this season drew an astounding 11,075 fans and saw the Gauchos earn a 1-0 double overtime victory. Cal Poly coach Paul Holocher gives his thoughts on his team’s season to date, the intense rivalry with their Central-Coast neighbor, and his team’s prospects on Wednesday.
