The final week of the 2008 men's soccer season will decide the peking order of the inaugural Big West Tournament as five clubs battle for the coveted four spots.
There is a new leader heading into the final week as #25 Cal Poly's recent surge has propelled them to first place in the conference. The Mustangs have just one match left and the simplest road to the top seed, beat Central Coast rival #19 UC Santa Barbara on the road Wednesday and they will be the Big West regular season champion for the first time. A loss by Cal Poly opens up the door for several other teams depending on the rest of Wednesday's action.
Second place #19 UC Santa Barbara has the toughest remaining schedule as the Gauchos take on Cal Poly at home and travel to #11 UC Davis Saturday for a rare pre-noon start. UCSB, which has won two straight regular season conference titles, needs to defeat both clubs to ensure themselves of the top position, or at least defeat the Mustangs to remain in the mix heading into the showdown with the Aggies.
#11 UC Davis fell out of the top spot and sits in third place heading into the final week. This marks the second consecutive week the Aggies have had only one match, but it is a huge encounter against UCSB. Once the action Wednesday plays out, UCD will need a result to either boost themselves into a tie for first or the very least, second place which would ensure it at least one match match in the inaugural tourney.
#11 UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge have the task of battling each other and keeping an eye on the three teams above them for entry into the tournament. The Anteaters face UC Riverside Wednesday, while the Matadors battle Cal State Fullerton on the road the same day. The big matchup for the two is the head-to-head showdown Saturday afternoon in Northridge in what could amount to an elimination match depending on Wednesday’s results.
There will also be one non-conference match on the ledger as #25 Cal Poly heads to Westwood to take on newly-minted Pac-10 champion #19 UCLA. The Bruins have rebounded from a tough start to punch their ticket into the NCAA Tournament so a win over them would be a resume boost for the Mustangs.
