Cal Poly Sweeps First Weekly Awards of Swimming Season
Two Cal Poly swimmers got their season off on the right foot last weekend at the Malibu Invitational as Peter Kline and Gloria Benefield were named the Big West Men's and Women's Athlete of the Week, respectively.
Kline, a native of Fresno, Calif., was victorious in four events at the Malibu Invitational. The sophomore kicked off his time in the pool with a victory in the 100 back in a time of 51.88, then won the 200 IM in 1:55.26, besting the second-place finisher by more than four and a half seconds.
Kline then set his sights on the distance races, picking up a one second victory in the 200 back in 1:53.51. He saved his best for last however, winning the 400 IM by nearly 15 seconds in 4:03.40. His time is currently the 19th fastest time in the nation this season, and was over 20 seconds better than the next Cal Poly finisher.
Benefield, who hails from San Diego, Calif., came up with three wins in the pool at Pepperdine. She first claimed victory in the 100 fly (58.60), .then posted a winning time of 2:06.60 in the 200 fly. The sophomore then capped her day with a winning time of 2:08.01 in the 200 back. In addition to her victories, Benefield also posted a team-best time of 26.80 seconds in the 50 fly and was second-best on the team in the 100 free and 200 and 400 IM races.
