The past seven days in Cal Poly athletics saw a historic victory, two Mustang teams climb to the top of their conference standings, and one team drop back into the thick of their title race. All the events in Mustang athletics are recapped in this week’s press conferences from
San Luis Obispo , now available on BigWest.TV.
On Sunday, October 12, Mustang fans watched on BigWest.TV as sophomore Monica Hernandez’ goal with five seconds remaining netted women’s soccer coach Alex Crozier his 200th career victory. The win also kept the Mustangs (8-6-0 overall, 3-0-0 in conference) in a first-place tie in the Big West with surprising Pacific (8-5-0, 3-1-0). Coach Crozier takes time this week to reflect on his historic victory while looking ahead to this week’s matches. The Cal Poly women return to action on Sunday, October 19 when they host central-coast rival and pre-season Big West Conference favorite UC Santa Barbara (9-5-0, 2-1-0). The match will be available on BigWest.TV beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT.
The Mustang men’s soccer team (8-3-2, 3-1-0) came away with two victories over the past week and are now a point behind UC Davis (11-1-1, 3-0-1) in the conference standings. Coach Paul Holocher talks about the title chase and gives his thoughts on this week’s upcoming matchup. The Mustangs will host UC Santa Barbara on Friday, October 17 in what is becoming one of the sport’s biggest rivalries. Last year’s match-ups saw over 15,000 fans watch the two programs clash live. The match is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and will also be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel.
As the two Mustang soccer teams ascend to the top of their standings, the Cal Poly women’s volleyball team fell back to the pack a little after splitting last week’s matches, a loss to No. 24 Long Beach State and a victory over UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly (9-7, 4-1) is now tied with
State and a half-game behind Pacific in the conference race. Watch as coach Jon Stevenson gives his thoughts the past weeks’ events and on the conference race. Cal Poly women’s volleyball will host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, October 16 and UC Irvine on Saturday, October 18. As always, both matches will be available on BigWest.TV and are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
