UC Irvine is in 27th place after the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship on The Kampen Course at Birck Boilermaker Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. Wednesday.
The Anteaters shot a 32-over total of 320. USC and UCLA shot a 9-over total of 297 to tie for the team lead in the 30-team field.
Junior Tim Cha had the best round for the Anteaters with a 77. He is 53rd individually while senior Kenny Kim and junior Sean Shahi are tied for 100th at 80. Sophomore John Chin is in 126th after an 80 and freshman Max Greil had an 85 to sit in 145th place.
UCLA's Kevin Chappell is the individual leader with a 3-under 69 in the opening round.
Round two Thursday has UCI teeing off from the 10th tee at 9:12 a.m. (PDT) with Oregon and Augusta State.
