The focus is on the post-season this week during the Cal Poly weekly press conferences. First up is newly crowned Big West Heptathlon Champion Sharon Day, who is also one of the greatest athletes in Mustang history. Day set new school and conference marks last weekend, with 5,642 points over May 9 and 10, which also qualifies for the NCAA Championships. Day will compete again this weekend, May 16 and 17, at the Big West Track & Field Championships in the high jump, the event in which she is ranked No. 1 in the nation and won an NCAA title in 2005. Track & Field Director Terry Crawford previews the Big West Conference Championships in her press conference.
Post-season competition is also on the minds of the women’s tennis doubles team of Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong. The sophomores are the first Mustang individual or doubles team to qualify for the NCAA Championships. They were awarded their automatic qualification on the basis of their No. 46 ITA National Ranking. While some spring sports are in post-season, baseball still has two weeks remaining in the regular season. Mustangs head coach Larry Lee discusses his team’s series last weekend against league-leading Cal State Fullerton, and looks ahead to this weekend’s series against
Long Beach
State . The Mustangs will play three at home beginning Friday, May 16, with first pitched scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PDT. The series will be available on BigWest.TV.
