Top-seeded Long Beach State took the first step toward defending its position as three-time defending champion with a 4-0 victory against No. 8 UC Riverside in Friday's quarterfinals of the Big West Women's Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The 49ers captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Stephanie Jeanes and Jessica Weeks won 8-3 at No. 2 against Angelique Corpuz and Roxanne Plata. Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton earned an 8-2 victory versus Nadia and Yasaman Sakhakorn at the No. 3 position.
Long Beach State kept the momentum going in singles play with wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Hannah Grady downed UCR's Erynne Oki 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Jeanes defeated Nadia Sakhakorn 6-2, 6-0, and Emmanuelle Tabatruong swept past Plata 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Long Beach State improved to 16-5 while UC Riverside concluded its season at 9-11. The 49ers advance to Saturday's semifinals against the winner of the Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara match.

No. 2 seed UC Irvine notched a 5-0 win against seventh-seeded Pacific in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Big West Women's Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday.
UCI climbed out to a 1-0 lead by winning matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Clare Fermin and Rebecca Kwan posted an 8-5 victory against Jolanta Twarowska and Sasha Fisher at No. 2. Ali Borowicz and Jessica Broadfoot clinched the doubles point with their win at No. 3 over Olga Gumenyuk and Clara Schuhmacher.
Four of the six singles matches were completed with the Anteaters sweeping them all in straight sets. At No. 1, Anteater senior Becky Bernhard won her 11th straight singles match, defeating Jolanta Twarowska 6-2, 6-4. Inna Agababian claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Svenja Arens and Brooke Bartlett downed Olga Gumenyuk 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4. UCI also received a 6-4, 6-2 victory from Heidi Kaloi against Sasha Fisher at No. 6.
UC Irvine upped its record to 15-8 and will face the winner of the match between No. 3 Cal State Northridge and No. 6 UC Davis. Pacific ended its season at 6-14.
