Jepson, Huang Grab Final Big West Weekly Awards


UC Santa Barbara's Travis Jepson and Pacific's Jun Huang picked up the final 2007-08 Big West Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week honors after impressive performances in the last dual meet of the year. This is the first honor of the season for both swimmers.

Jepson swam two season-best marks to help guide the Gauchos to a win over Pacific. The Campbell, Calif., native won the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.98 and placed second in the 100 breast with 58.31 mark. He also picked up two third-place finishes in the UC Davis dual meet, lifting UC Santa Barbara to a 136-125 victory over the Aggies. Once again competing in the 100 and 200 breast, he recorded times of 58.92 and 2:08.69.

Huang nabbed two individual victories in the Tigers' dual meet against defending Big West Champion UC Santa Barbara. She swam a mark of 56.77 in the 100 backstroke before dominating the 200 back with a time of 2:00.96, four seconds faster than second place. The Guangzhou, China, native connected with her teammates to pick up two second-place finishes in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Both athletes return to the pool Wednesday, Feb. 20 for the 2008 Big West Swimming & Diving Championship. The four-day event (Feb. 20-23) will be held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif. Qualifying rounds begin at 11:00 a.m. and the finals are slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
