Returning from a 48-day break, the UC Irvine Anteaters are back in action this weekend when they host the Ayres Hotel & Suites Invitational at the Anteaters Aquatics Complex. The two-day event is scheduled on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 6 with events beginning at 9:00 a.m. on day one and 10:00 a.m. on day two.
Along with UC Irvine, Big West foe Cal State Northridge is also scheduled to compete in this weekend's event. The Anteaters and Matadors are joined by Washington State, UNLV, Boise State, San Jose State, San Diego, Pepperdine, Biola, Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Incarnate Word, Whitman and Willamette. UCI is the defending champion in the men's sprint and distance meets and has won five straight distance meets and three of the past four sprint meets.
The Anteater men's team is led by Eddie Erazo, who sits atop the leaderboard in the 100 and 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly. Erazo also has top 10 finishes in the 200 and 500 free and 100 fly. Teammate Will Wollam ranks fourth in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 free.
Lyndsay DePaul and Chelsea Nagata have set the standard for the UC Irvine women's squad with a multitude of top five times in the Big West. DePaul currently owns the top spot in the 200 butterfly, while Nagata leads the way in the 100 butterfly. DePaul also ranks first in the 200 individual medley and second in the 400 IM. Both athletes have also flourished in the freestyle events with Nagata sitting in the top five in the 50 and 100 free and DePaul posting strong performances in the 200 and 500 free.
Leading the way for the Matadors men's team is Emre Celik, who ranks third in the conference in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200 backstroke. Jeff Hart owns the Big West's fifth-best time in the 100 freestyle, while holding the sixth spot in the 50 freestyle. Also recording a top-20 time in the 50 free is Chris Grafton, who sits in the 11th slot.
For the women's squad, distance swimmer Shannon Colavito has made an impact in the Big West with top 20 times in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle. Robyn Johnson swam the sixth-best time in the 100 breaststroke and posted an 11th-place time in the 200 breast. Olesya Senicheva has made her presence felt in the butterfly events.
