UC Irvine's Lyndsay DePaul and Cal Poly's Matthew Waggoner earned Big West Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week accolades, for the week ending Nov. 11. This marks DePaul's second consecutive weekly award, while Waggoner picks up his first.
At the Anteaters' dual meet at the University of Arizona, DePaul captured three first-place victories in the 200 butterfly, 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley. She posted a NCAA ‘A’ cut time of 1:58.33 in the 200 fly, while scoring ‘B’ cut times in both the 500 free (4:51.94) and 200 IM (2:01.21). The Orange, Calif., native has now qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 fly, 500 free, 1650 free, 200 IM and the 400 IM after just two weeks of competition.
On the men's side, Waggoner won two middle distance events at UC Santa Barbara, where they faced both the Gauchos and UC San Diego. His time of 4:32.85 in the 500 freestyle broke a Cal Poly school record. Hailing from Yorba Linda, Calif., Waggoner earned his second victory of the day after completing the 1000 free in a time of 9:42.57.
