Cal State Fullerton's Mel Franks and UC Irvine's Bob Olson received the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 25-Year Award at the organization's annual convention that took place at the Marriott Marina in San Diego Tuesday.
Franks has completed 27 years in the Cal State Fullerton athletic department, overseeing the media relations effort for 17 intercollegiate sports. He has seen the rise and fall of the football program, a recently ended streak of 380 consecutive Titans' men's basketball games and three national baseball championships during 12 visits to Omaha. He is first in seniority in the Big West Conference and second among California Div. I sports information directors (San Jose State's Lawrence Fan preceded him by five weeks).
Olson just completed his 25th year at UC Irvine directing the publicity efforts for the university's 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. He joined the UCI staff as sports information director in July 1982 and was named assistant athletic director/communications in 1991. In the fall of 2006, Olson became the associate athletic director/communications. Olson has served as press room/communications coordinator for several NCAA Division I men's basketball West Regionals and First & Second Rounds in the past 15 years. A member of the United States Basketball Writers Association, he has worked 721 consecutive UC Irvine men's basketball games.
