UC Irvine Concludes NCAA West Regional In 22nd Place

The UC Irvine men's golf team finished 22nd in the NCAA West Regional that concluded Saturday at the ASU Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz.

The Anteaters carded a 2-under 286 for their best round of the tournament, finishing with a 1-under 54-hole total of 863. South Carolina overtook UCLA for the team title after shooting a 278 for a total of 44-under 820, besting the Bruins by two strokes. USC and Arizona State tied for third place at 824.

Senior Jay Choe was UCI's top individual finisher, shooting 70-69-71 for a 6-under 210 and a tie for 40th place. Freshman John Chin had the best round of the regional for UCI, as his 69 tied him for 81st with a 54-hole total of 216 (74-73-69). Sophomore Tim Cha posted a 76-72-70 for a 2-over 218 and a tie for 93rd place. Senior Brian Edick finished in a tie for 108th place with a 221, while sophomore Sean Shahi tied for 121st with a 225 (74-75-76).

Cal Poly freshman Geoff Gonzalez and Pacific senior Thomas Petersson, competing as individuals, also concluded West Regional play Saturday. Gonzalez fired a 67 to finish up with a 4-under 212, rising from 84th to 53rd in the final individual standings. Petersson, who carded back-to-back 71s in the first two rounds, had a 75 on Saturday to conclude the regional with a 1-over 217. He tied for 86th place.
