Cal Poly and UC Irvine got an early lead in the 2007 Big West Track & Field Championships as the Mustangs' James Nunno and the Anteaters' Lauren Collins won the decathlon and heptathlon titles, respectively.
Nunno entered the day in second place but finished strong to overtake day one leader Robert Robinson of Cal State Northridge. The senior, who recorded 6,772 points, took finished in the top two in the discus (2nd), 1,500-meter run (2nd) and pole vault (1st) on the way to the individual crown. He also finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles and seventh in the javelin. Robinson was second with 6,656 tallies, while Shawn Maghzi was third with 6,436 points.
UC Irvine's Lauren Collins won the Heptathlon event at the 2007 Big West Track and Field Championships on Sunday. The sophomore recorded the fastest time in the 100 Hurdles and had the second best marks in the High Jump and the 200 Meters after Day One's events. Collins then had the second best mark in the Javelin and the 800 Meters to tally 5,512 points. The point tally qualifies Collins for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento. She also broke her own school record in the event.
Cal Poly's Sharon Day finished in second place after recording the top mark in the 800 Meters on Sunday and the top marks in the High Jump and the 200 Meters on Saturday. Day finished with 5,244 points. Cal State Northridge's Brittany Ricketts finished in third place with 5,151 points after having the top mark in the Long Jump on Sunday and the top mark in the Shot Put on Saturday.
