UCSB's Pat Cary Named Mid-Major Swimmer of the Year

UCSB junior Pat Cary earned an NCAA consideration standard with his time of 1:48.56 in the 200 fly versus Arizona State last weekend.
UC Santa Barbara's Pat Cary added another honor to his impressive swimming career as he was named collegeswimming.com Mid-Major Swimmer of the Year. Princeton's Alicia Aemisegger was tabbed the Swimmer of the Year on the women's side.

Cary, a senior, received the honor for his eighth-place performance in the 200 Butterfly at the 2007 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. The Big West Conference title-holder was fifth in the same event last year and is a three-time Mid-Major All-American.

Thirty-five additional swimmers and divers were named to the Mid-Major All-American team on the basis of their qualification to the national meet, with the Big West Conference leading all the leagues with 11 swimmers earning such accolades. Gauchos Anne Marie May and Jennifer Schwalb joined Cary on the list of elite swimmers. Also representing the conference are Pacific's Wojceich Betlej and Krzysztof Zoldak and UC Irvine's Lyndsay DePaul, Eddie Erazo, Chelsea Nagata, Eric Reilly, Daniel Simonsen and Randall Tom.

Institutions are designated as mid-major on the basis of their conference affiliation. Schools eligible for the mid-major designation do not come from one of the eight major NCAA Division I-A football conferences or award fewer than seven women's or five men's scholarships.
