The Long Beach State women's golf team finishes out the regular season at the Peg Barnard Invitational, featuring a field of 13 squads at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. It is the final event for the 49ers before the 2007 Big West Golf Championships on April 23-24 at Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
The 49ers are led by junior Kay Hoey, who tied for sixth in a highly competitive field at the PING/Arizona State Invitational last month. Hoey has posted three top 10 finishes in three tournaments this spring.
UC Irvine, the highest ranked Big West team in the latest Golfweek Women's Team Ratings at No. 31, is idle until the Big West Championships after tying for fourth at the BYU Dixie Classic earlier this week. The Anteaters have placed in the top five in all four spring tournaments.
The Cal State Northridge women host the Northridge Spring Classic on April 9-10 in Moorpark, Calif. Fellow Big West squads Cal Poly and UC Riverside also are participating.
On the men's side, Cal Poly heads into the Big West Championships riding high from the momentum of winning two tournaments last week. CP took home the title of its own Mustang Intercollegiate by a 13-stroke margin, then came back three days later with a stirring performance at the Ogio Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. The Mustangs made up a four stroke deficit in the final round to beat out Denver for the title in the 18-team field. Junior Chris Kirk, who led the Cal Poly "B" team to a fifth place finish at the Mustang Intercollegiate, locked up a spot on the "A" team by earning medalist honors with a three-round total of 199. He shot a school record 64 in the first round, following that up with rounds of 67 and 68.
UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara compete next week at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. The five-year old event features 23 teams and is played on the Talking Stick North Course, which also has hosted the PGA Tour Qualifying School and USGA Sectional Qualifier in previous years.
