    Idaho and Utah State Capture Big West Cross Country Championships
    The Idaho women and the Utah State men took home the team titles at the 2002 Big West Cross Country Championships at the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Race Course on Saturday, November 2.

    The Vandals finished four of their five runners in the top 12 on the 5,000 meter course and won with 48 points. Sophomore Letiwe Marakurwa was the individual champion with a time of 17:47.0, 9.6 seconds ahead of second place finisher Katie Appenrodt of UC Santa Barbara. Junior Tania Vander Meulen ran the course in 18:03.2 to finish in third.

    UC Santa Barbara came in second with 55 points and UC Irvine third with 72.

    Marakurwa, a four-time honoree of the Big West Athlete of the Week this season, was selected Women's Athlete of the Year at the conclusion of the meet. Idaho's Wayne Phipps was named Big West Coach of the Year.

    On the men's side, Utah State had five runners finish in the top 10 to tally 25 points. The Aggies edged out second place Cal Poly, which accounted for four competitors in the top 10 and tallied 40 points. Senior Mitch Zundel was the individual champion with a time of 24:46.5, holding off teammate Mike Nielson (24:47.4) by less than a second.

    Cal Poly junior Sean Ricketts came in third in 24:56.8 and UC Santa Barbara senior JT Service was fourth in 24:58.6.

    Zundel was tabbed Big West Male Athlete of the Year and Utah State's Gregg Gensel earned Big West Coach of the Year accolades.

    Big West men's and women's cross country teams now look forward to regional competition two weeks from now.
