UC Santa Barbara won itís third Big West Conference men's cross country team title and Cal Poly defended its' women's team title at the Big West Cross Country Championships this past Saturday at the Fairbanks Course in San Luis Obispo.

UC Santa Barbara's Eric Gans won the men's individual title and was named the Male Athlete of the Year while teammate Katie Appenrodt took home the women's individual title and was named the Female Athlete of the Year.

Gans completed the difficult 8,000-meter course in 25:56.4 with teammate Josh Horton behind him at 25:59.2.

Appenrodt completed the women's 5,000 meter course in 17:47.8 defeating Cal Poly's Jessica Dahlberg by nine seconds.

In the men's team competition, UC Santa Barbara and Utah State made up 10 of the top 11 finishers to finish just six points within each other. Top Aggie finisher, Steve Prescott, recorded a time of 26:01.1, while teammate Dusan Hlubocky came in at 26:10.8 to help lead the team to a second place finish.

On the women's side, Cal Poly had five of the top fifteen runners to finish 28 points ahead of second place UC Irvine. Top Mustangs runner, Jessica Dahlberg finished just seconds behind the first place finisher with a time of 17:56.8. Teammates Kathyrn Schlegel and Amber Simmons also helped secure a first place team finish by placing 4th and 5th, respectively.

UCSB head coach Pete Dolan was named the Big West Men's Coach of the Year while Cal Poly head coach Terry Crawford was voted as the Big West Women's Coach of the Year.
