NO. 22 SAN DIEGO TOPS UC IRVINE, 3-1 AT AZTEC INVITATIONAL
San Diego, Calif. – The 22nd ranked University of San Diego women’s volleyball team topped UC Irvine, 3-1 (25-16, 26-24, 21-25, 25-20) at the Aztec Invitational at Peterson Gym on the San Diego State campus Saturday.
San Diego improves to 2-0 on the year, while the Anteaters go to 1-1. Later today, UCI will take on Albany at 4:00 p.m. and USD will face host San Diego State at 7:00 p.m.
The Toreros were led by the Amy DeGroot with 18 kills followed by Ashton Basch who had 15 kills while hitting .500 (15-2-26) for the match. Senior setter Jessica Nyrop tallied 44 assists, nine digs and tied Basch with a team-high four blocks. Libero Andrea Csaszi recorded a match-high 21 digs.
UCI was out-blocked 9-5 and hit just .167 for the match. For the second consecutive match, the Anteaters fired seven service aces.
Sophomore Kari Pestolesi led UCI with 14 kills and 12 digs, her first double-double of the year. Senior Lauren Kellerman added 11 kills, four service aces and nine digs. Setter Taryn Robertson recorded six kills, 34 assists and a team-high four total blocks. In two tournament matches, Robertson has a .684 attack percentage (13-0-19). Middle blocker Chelsea Ellis totaled five kills, two aces and three blocks. Libero Devon Sutherland had 14 digs and middle blocker Shannan Homan totaled eight kills.
After San Diego won the first game, 25-16, game two was closely contested with the teams deadlocked at 24-24. USD’s Amy DeGroot fired a service ace which was followed by an Anteater hitting miscue to give the Toreros the 26-24 victory.
In game three, UCI used kills by Chelsea Ellis and Taryn Robertson plus a USD hitting error to open up a three-point lead 10-6 and extended the advantage to six, 16-10 on a Kari Pestolesi kill. Pestolesi recorded her fifth kill in the set to end the game, 25-21.
UCI led 15-12 in game four before USD went on a 4-0 run to take the 16-14 lead. The Anteaters would rally to tie the game at 18-18, but USD would out-score UCI, 7-2 to end the game, 25-20.
