LONG BEACH STATE’S WEAVER HEADLINES BIG WEST ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
IRVINE, CA -- The 2001 Big West Women’s Volleyball All-Conference Team was announced today, and for the second straight year Long Beach State’s Cheryl Weaver was named the conference’s Player of the Year. Long Beach State’s Brian Gimmillaro was recognized as Big West Coach of the Year, while Cal Poly’s Jessica Diepersloot was honored as Big West Freshman of the Year.
Weaver joined a select list of Long Beach State players – Misty May, Danielle Scott, Tara Cross – who have earned Big West Player of the Year honors at least twice. The 6-2 middle blocker finished the regular season as the conference leader in hitting percentage (.443) while ranking third in kills per game (4.62) and seventh in blocks per game (1.18 bpg). Weaver was selected Big West Player of the Week on four occasions and registered double-digit kills in all but two of LBSU’s 28 matches. The native of Washington D.C. hit above .400 in matches against top 25 opponents Nebraska, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, Pacific and Brigham Young.
Diepersloot became the first Cal Poly player to garner Freshman of the Year honors since Anja Knutsen in 1989. Diepersloot, a 6-1 outside hitter, led the Mustangs with 212 digs and finished second in kills with 294. The native of Chowchilla, Calif. recorded 17 matches with double-figure kills and sported five double-doubles on the season. Diepersloot also averaged 0.71 blocks per game.
Gimmillaro received the top coaching honor on the basis of leading Long Beach State to an undefeated record in the regular season (28-0) and a current nine-week stay as the nation’s top-ranked team in the USA Today/AVCA poll. In his 17th season at the helm of the 49ers, this is Gimmillaro’s sixth Big West Coach of the Year award. He also received the accolade in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997 and 1998. Gimmillaro led the 49ers to their eighth Big West championship with an unblemished 18-0 record, marking the fourth time during his tenure that LBSU has gone undefeated in conference play.
Long Beach State led the 15-member All-Big West Team with four representatives, followed by Pacific with three. UC Santa Barbara and Utah State had two selections.
Weaver and Long Beach State teammate Tayyiba Haneef were selected to the All-Big West First Team for the third time. Pacific’s Jamie Hamm and Jennifer Joines, along with UC Santa Barbara’s Danielle Bauer made the First Team for the second time.
