49ers Claim Second Consecutive Big West Tournament Title with 1-0 Win at UC Irvine
Behind a phenomenal defensive performance and a goal from senior Jazz Strozier, the Long Beach State women's soccer team claimed its second consecutive Big West Tournament title with a 1-0 victory over top-seeded and 16th-ranked UC Irvine Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.
Long Beach State, UC Irvine Set For Championship Rematch
A highly anticipated showdown between No. 1 UC Irvine and No. 2 Long Beach State became reality as the two schools took care of business on Thursday. The Anteaters topped UC Davis and the 49ers dispatched Cal State Northridge in the Big West Tournament semifinals, setting up a rematch of the 2010 final between the two conference powers. Kickoff from Anteater Stadium is set for noon on Sunday.
Format
Seeding for the tournament was determined by the final regular season conference standings.
The top four teams advanced to the tournament, with No. 1 seed UC Irvine hosting No. 4 seed UC Davis and No. 2 seed Long Beach State hosting No. 3 seed Cal State Northridge.
The championship game shall be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
