UC Davis was the big winner at the 2010 Big West Swimming & Diving Championships, sweeping the men's and women's team titles after the four day event. The team titles are the first for either gender during conference membership and the fourth team championships in any sport for the school since the institution joined the Big West in 2007-08.
The UCD women took home their crown with 864 points, outlasting four-time defending champion UC Santa Barbara which collected 852 points. Third place went to Cal Poly, the tournament host, with 620 points, while Pacific (466.5) and Cal State Northridge (347.5) wrapped up the women’s scoreboard.
The Aggie men celebrated with the hardware after amassing 958.5 points, the most point picked up by a winning team in a five-team Big West set up. Second place belonged to UC Santa Barbara, the two-time defending champion, with 896.5 points, while Cal Poly came in third with 635 points. Pacific (464) and Cal State Northridge (256) completed the men’s standings.
The first final of the day took place on the diving board as the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter diving events were contested. The women's 1-meter title was claimed by Jennifer Meyer of UC Davis with 224.65 points, while her teammate on the men's side, Jason Andrade, won the men's 3-meter with a total of 277.05 points.
The first race was the most grueling of the week as the 1650 freestyle kicked off the night's festivities. Cal Poly's Lacey Buck won her second consecutive title in the event, topping the field in an NCAA "B" cut time of 16:39.63. The Mustangs' Matt Waggoner also claimed his second career 1650 title as he won the men's race in 15:21.18, an NCAA "B" cut time.
The next event was the 200 back and the fast times continued to be posted by the athletes. On the women's side, UC Santa Barbara's Katie Stover won the race in an NCAA "B" cut effort 1:58.93. The men's race saw a new meet and conference record established as Peter Kline of Cal Poly set the standard with his time of 1:44.85.
An exciting sprint event was next on the ledger as the 100 free took its turn in the showcase. Kayleigh Foley of UC Davis claimed the individual title as she posted an NCAA "B" cut time of 49.45. Chris Peterson led a UC Santa Barbara sweep on the men's side as he posted an NCAA "B" cut time of 44.33 for the title.
Up next was the 200 breast and on the women's side, Angie Haven of Cal Poly continued her stellar 2010 championship run with a win in an NCAA "B" cut 2:14.26. It was her third individual title at this season's league meet. On the men's side, UC Davis' Scott Weltz also won his third individual title at the 2010 Big West meet as he downed the field in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:56.14.
The next event saw another multi-winner claim a title as Cal State Northridge's Yulia Gavrilova claimed the 200 butterfly in 2:00.09, her second title of the 2010 league meet. It also marks the first time that the CSUN women have won multiple individual titles at the Conference Championship since 2001. The men's race was an exciting affair as UC Santa Barbara's Danny McClary won the event in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:47.41, just .34 seconds ahead of the second place finisher Danny Donnelly of UC Davis.
After a timeout from the meet to recognize the seniors from all the teams, the 400 free relay would mark the final event of the 2010 Championships. UC Santa Barbara swept both relays as the women finished in 3:20.99, while the men wrapped up the event in 2:57.28. Both times were NCAA "B" cuts.
