Cal State Northridge 61, UC Santa Barbara 58
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Ian Boylan's two free throws with 16.2 seconds
to play iced the game for the Matadors of Cal State-Northridge as they slipped
past the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos, 61-58, in the semifinals of the Big West
Conference Tournament from Anaheim Convention Center.
Boylan finished with 13 points on the night for the sixth-seeded Matadors
(13-15), as did Eto Onyenegecha, while Joseph Frazier led the way with a game-
high 19 points in the victory for the squad.
As the lowest remaining seed in the tournament the Matadors will now play
against top-seeded and 22nd-ranked Utah State in the semifinal round on Friday
night.
The third-seeded Gauchos (16-12) were paced by Cecil Brown and Jacoby Atako
who tallied 10 points apiece.
Northridge held an early lead in the first half, but a quick 8-0 burst by the
Gauchos pushed them ahead and en route to a 33-27 advantage at the break.
In the second half UCSB missed all five chances from behind the three-point
line and converted a total of just eight field goals, allowing the Matadors to
slip back into contention and on to the three-point win.
Cal State-Northridge won the battle of the boards by a narrow 28-25 margin and
forced 19 turnovers on the night. The Matadors shot nearly as well from three-
point range (.417) as they did from the field (.426) overall.
Defensively, Northridge allowed UCSB to shoot 47.5 percent from the field, but
completely shut out the Gauchos on the perimeter where they missed all nine of
their three-point attempts.
