Pacific 64, Utah State 60
Stockton, CA (Sports Network) - Miah Davis made four free throws in the final
28.2 seconds, as Pacific edged 19th-ranked Utah State, 64-60, in a battle
between the top two teams in the Big West Conference at the Alex G. Spanos
Center.
Davis ended with 18 points for the Tigers (17-7, 12-1 Big West), who have won
eight straight games and 13 of their last 14 overall. Christian Maraker and
Tyler Newton each ended with 12 points for Pacific, which moved into a first-
place tie in the conference along with Utah State.
Cardell Butler had 16 points for the Aggies (20-2, 12-1), who had their 17-
game winning streak snapped. The winning streak, which was two wins shy of the
longest streak in school history, was the fourth-longest in the country behind
only Saint Joseph's, Stanford and Duke.
Pacific trailed by eight at halftime and it was down as many as 12 points
midway through the second half. However, they fought back and trimmed the
deficit to four points at 52-48 on Davis' field goal with just over seven
minutes left in the game.
The Tigers pulled even closer as Tyler Newton's basket with 4:50 remaining
brought Pacific within 56-54. The teams then traded scores over the next few
minutes and Utah State held a 60-58 lead with 2:04 left in the game.
Maraker tied the game at 60-60 when he knocked down a pair of free throws with
1:19 remaining. Both teams then missed jumpers, but the Aggies were called for
a foul with 28.2 seconds left and Davis made two free throws to put Pacific
ahead 62-60.
Utah State had a chance to tie, but Butler missed a jumper and Davis grabbed
the rebound. Davis then sealed the win by knocking down two foul shots with
6.8 seconds remaining for the four-point win.
Pacific was able to hold its opponent scoreless over the final 3:25.
The Aggies led by two early on, but they used a 10-0 burst to capture a 20-8
advantage with 10:50 left in the first half. Mike Ahmad scored four points,
while Jason Williams and Mark Brown each drained three-pointers during the
lengthy run.
Pacific, though, fought back and used a 15-5 spurt, highlighted by a pair
of three-pointers from Tom Cockle, to get within 25-23 with just over seven
minutes left in the half.
Utah State regrouped and carried a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
Game Notes: Utah State had its 17-game conference winning streak dating back to last
season snapped and lost for only the third time in its last 28 games overall
(25-3)...The Aggies had won six straight road games, which was tied for the
second-most in school history. The 1999-2000 Utah State club won nine straight
road games during the season...Pacific, which lost to the Aggies 66-51 earlier
this season, trail the all-time series 41-20.
